Have you ever eaten a tomato or asparagus straight from the bush? Picked strawberries or blueberries? Do you notice how much better they taste than the stuff at the supermarket? There’s a reason for that. And it just might surprise you.

Produce travels a long way to make it to our homes and tables. Growing your own food has many other benefits, besides being super fresh, tastier, and better for the environment. You know that feeling of satisfaction from indulging in something you’ve totally earned, be it a vacation or other fruits of your labor? Well, we’re talking literally here about indulging in “the fruits of your labor!” What could be more satisfying than biting into a juicy tomato that you’ve grown yourself?

Here are just a few other benefits to gardening:

  • Enjoy a fun, rewarding hobby.
  • Reap and share the treasurers.
  • Involve kids, and teach them about having responsibility for another living thing.
  • Prepare for the end of the world. (Yes, you read that right. I’ve met some people who garden so that they will have a food source when the world ends. Yes, they are totally serious about it.)
  • This is a great form of exercise!
  • There are numerous other health benefits to gardening, including better sleep and lowered risks of osteoporosis, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and other health issues.

Surrounding yourself with so much living green stuff is a natural antidepressant, and can cheer any disposition!
